In 1997, the biosphere reserve Riverlandscape Elbe was officially designated by UNESCO. This expansion incorporates land in the German states of Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Schleswig-Holstein.  The Biosphere Reserve is in the length grows to over 400 km. As a result, the complex habitats of the Elbe will be protected as part of one of the largest biosphere reserves in Europe.
